The Consorzio Vini di Orvieto, was founded in 1958,
with the aim of protecting the image and quality of Orvieto
wine, as the Consorzio del Vino Tipico di Orvieto, and
became the Consorzio Tutela Vino Orvieto in 1971,
when the DOC was recognised.
The percentage of the product made by members of the Consortium
accounts for about 90% of the total quantity. Since 1998
the Consortium has also protected the DOC Rosso Orvietano
which covers the same land as the DOC Orvieto in the province
of Terni.
DOC Rosso Orvietano was defined in 1998 with the aim of
diversifying products within a large winemaking area and
creating a synergy between the two wines in order to improve
market representation.
The Consortium's activity is promotion of the improvement
of the quality of the wines, through both its own experimental
vineyards, and those of its members, where new and native
grape varieties are compared.
Work in the cellars aims for organoleptic features that
will make a more fascinating Orvieto in line with changing
consumer tastes.
